Our Process

Design Meeting:

After contacting PHI Decks via either our website or by telephone (612-399-6744) we will setup an in-home consultation.  This consultation usually takes between half an hour to 1 hour, however can vary depending on the complexity of your project.  The goal of this consultation is to determine size, layout, products to be used and any other details necessary to provide you with the best design possible.  We also have an Idea Book to help fine tune what exactly you are looking for.  If you are able to give us a rough budget at this time it can help us to design exactly what you are looking for.

Bidding phase:

After collecting all necessary information we will return to the office and begin preparing your custom deck design.  We will create 3D renderings to help you visualize your new outdoor space and help determine colors and finishes prior to construction.  Along with these renderings we will supply you with a written proposal of the exact cost of your project.  This is a hard bid, the cost of your project will not go up unless a change is made to the scope or we encounter an unforeseen issue (unforeseen soil issues, existing structural damage requiring attention, etc).

If design and product changes are made, this bidding phase can span over a couple of weeks.  Our schedule does fill up quickly so if you are confident in selecting PHI Decks as your custom deck builder, we will take a 5% down payment to reserve your spot on the schedule.  Once your spot is reserved we can continue making changes and fine tune the design.

Bid acceptance and contract signing:

Once all design changes have been made and the final price has been agreed upon we will return to your house for the final proposal and contract signing.  At this meeting we will go through what you can expect once we start construction, an estimated start date, estimated completion date, we will also pick final colors for decking, railings, fascia, etc.  We will go through payment terms and collect a down payment.

Note: Every city charges different amounts for building permits.  Because of this we do not include the permit fee in our proposals.  PHI Decks will pull and pay for all necessary permits for your project prior to starting construction.  The fees associated with these permits will be added to your final invoice.  A typical deck permit costs between $100-$500 depending on the city and size of the deck.


Now the exciting part!  Our construction crews are made up of 2-4 carpenters, with the same crew on each job from beginning to end.  As long as weather and material availability cooperate, we will be working on your project from start to finish.  Typically this building process includes demo (if necessary), footings, framing, decking, stairs, railings, lighting, final touches and clean up.  We understand that you will be very anxious to get on your new PHI Deck and start grilling!  However even though the deck may look safe to walk on, please respect the jobsite and remain off the deck until given the “OK” by PHI Decks or the final inspection has been completed.

Follow up:

Just because your project has come to an end doesn’t mean that our service has.  Once you have had a little bit of time to move on to your new deck we will return to take some finished photos to showcase your new custom deck on our website and Facebook page.  You will also receive a follow up folder containing your final invoice, a PHI Decks survey, product warranty information, and some care and maintenance tips.  This follow up folder will either be mailed to you or dropped off at your house.
